Reflection (story worlds)

The significant guest speakers who have related to my own creative background are William Bardebes and Carsten Kudra, these two speakers each have different areas of interest, all three of these speakers practice in a creative area which I am interested in and the three different practices which were discussed about that relates to my creative practice is graphic design and film making. both of these practices are used in many different contexts and identifying how they use it in their own practice is important, as I think this will help me find a path to where I want to take my creative practice.
William Bardebes is a guest speaker who is a graphic designer. Bardebes is focused more on engaging his viewers with his work as he says that ” a successful graphic designer is someone who understands other story worlds and telling stories”, he believes that graphic design isn’t just a tool to tell produces and that there is more to it. Bardebes uses meaningful signs and symbols to communicate with his viewer’s, his inspiration and ideas of using graphic design as a communication tool came from being raised around watching news on the television about the Viet Nam war which included text and imagery. He also mentions how typography is important with communicating with viewers and should be practice a lot with, an example was given” fines are necessary for those street signs that are thoroughly confusing”. Bardebes context has impact on me because graphic design is one of the practices I’m interested in, I admire how he uses graphic design to communicate with his viewers, as I think it is important to use graphic design in a way which is not creating meaningless symbols, signs or text and as graphic design is widely seen and used around us we should consider not just having the main focused of graphic design for advertisement’s but as a tool to give a message to the viewers. From what was said I consider taking that away with me and betraying it in my own creative practice.
Carsten Kudra is another guest speaker who has a creative practice I am interested in. Kudra’s creative practice is based on the filming area, and he works on editing films. Kurdra uses editing to create a message in films to his viewers, he is interested in the genre of ‘alternative realities’ and this idea came to him from the influence of being born in a communist country which is East Germany and the changers happening there as he was growing up, he also read a lot and watched a lot of film’s growing up which has influence him to be interested in film making. Some areas Kudra has worked in are investigative journalism and documentary, he is currently a freelancing editor which has gave him the option of working some big companies and film directors like Vincent Ward. Kurdra is also interested in script writing his passion for this came from his personal hobby for Dungeons and Dragons as this requires him to write a scrip to create puzzles from the other players with his imagination. Kudra’s narrative impacted me because I have an interest of editing films in my creative practice, I find that using films to send a message is one of the best ways to give a big impact to your audience as it works with visuals, imagery and a story which makes your viewer feel a part of the film itself and here editing is important because every detail in the film is part of the message that is given for example sound effects lighting or the music and so I will consider that working with editing the film well is important as it has a big influence on the story or message.
As for my own creative DNA and what i’m influenced from comes from three areas from my life, the first is hobbies growing up, my history of reading books and also my love for music. Growing up I didn’t have much to do and most of the time I was bored at someones home who would be looking after me as my parents were working, which lead to me using pens and paper as a way to spare time and later on as I grew up I found out drawing was one of the things I was best at, as I started getting older I got the chance to go into different areas in art including photography, painting and others and these became my favourite subjects and also my best subjects as I would always find myself not enjoying other subjects and also not very good at them too. The second area in my life that impacts my creative DNA is my love for reading, this was were I got all my ideas from when I was about to draw if i had no ideas, because my imagination was very vivid I found it very interesting to create what the characters or settings looked in from the words in the book as they are very descriptive and this also brings me to my interest in film making because this allows me to put what I visualise to images. Lastly music was another big part of influencing me to my creative DNA as growing up I was surround in a area with music playing from peoples backyard everyday, I would close my eyes and visualise a surrounding based on the songs played because the area I lived in wasn’t the nicest I would use the music and my imagination to capture a different setting of location and this brings my interest to photography to use a device to capture images that contain images that don’t show a meaning but can be what ever we want depending on what you see.
overall both guest speakers William Bardebes and Carsten Kudra work in different practices in the creative field however they both have the intention to use their practices to send a message to their viewers, both their pracitces graphic design and flim making are a interest to me as it is something I would like to get into for my own creative practice and also using the idea of using your work or creations to send a message or a story to your viewers so my work as a meaning.

Best 10 final

I’ve choose these photographic’s as my best 10 because the contrast in these pictures are interesting. I played around with the light in these pictures to create different shapes and also the lighting was experimented with, I created different shadows with the lighting for example only having the light source as the brightest part and the object and background the darkest part, I also edited the picture to give the light source a glowing effect.

10 best 3D shapes

I choose these pieces as my best 10 for my 3D shape because in the pictures I showed negative space so the object it self can be focused on when viewers look at it, I also used wire as my material to create a path like structure.  The darker photographic’s however don’t use negative space, these objects are surround by shadow and I did this to give the line of light more definition, this is because the light was a object to use to show a path, I also used a found object as the shape behind the light to create two different contrasts with the light, and the background when the photo is converted into black and white.

Final

My final piece is a 3D shape, parts from my digital work, tactile and 3D shapes. From my digital work I took the shapes that were used for example squares and circle, I also used layering with the placing of the shapes and this was a technique I used in my digital pieces and from my tactile in some pieces I had painted some parts of it with marble effects, so I took that and painted the whole piece in a marble effect and the parts taken from my 3D shape is the materials used in this piece which is wood and wire and again here I used the wire to create a path way,I also used I strip of light this object is used through out my tactile and 3D shape for definition and also to represent a pathway.
The pictures here are also edited with photoshop and blending effects were added.

3D Shapes (Traverse)

These 3D shapes were made with wood and wire, the wires are bent to look like a abstract path and spray paint is used to paint the wire and the wood piece, however not the whole wire is painted black and this is because it greats a effect when taking a picture for the light to only hit parts of the wire and black was painted on the wood piece so the object is the most focused part and using a white background as the backdrop helps with this illusion. Light was also used as a object to create a path in my photography, I used the light to outline shapes and to show a simple line through shapes.

Pinterest Board (Pins for research)

Through out my research I looked at images of  graphic designs, paintings and sculptures. The images I have collected for my research all have a similar style of minimalism, geometrics and abstract, I choose images with these three themes because I find that most of my work I produce go under these three themes and looking at these images give me a lot of inspiration for what to create and experiment with, also it gave me ideas to try using different materials I haven’t used before in my work like light and wire, and as my main focus on is normally the digital side of design looking at other work besides digital pieces were very interesting to me.
The pieces from my digital work were inspired by me looking at geometric shapes. I looked at images at 1st that were very messy and a bit over the place with the shapes and shading, as I kept looking for more inspiration I found geometric shapes that looked very minimalistic and abstract, I ended up making my pieces based on this style and as I created pieces I found that not using a lot of detail but making it abstract made the piece seem liked there was a lot going on at the same time of it being minimalistic. The minimalistic images didn’t have that much elements on them, also had very little colour on them too and this gave the image a very straight forward concept, there wasn’t any meaning behind these pieces either, I also noticed that colours are placed in different ways to create the abstract look.
Other medium I looked at was paintings for my tactile pieces, as I hardly ever paint I wasn’t sure where to start with my work and so I looked at all styles of paintings for my research images to see what would inspire me the most and got pulled towards to the abstract paintings and pieces that used negative space. I mostly looked at paintings that had not a lot going on but played around with texture by the laying on black and white paint, also looking using strips of paint as the element in the piece. The lined used in the paintings I looked at were very controlled and had this flat and thin texture to it making it look transparent, however I also was interested in lines that looked free flowed as I wanted to experiment with the paint and different tools to create pieces. I ended up using different materials instead of a paint brush to create something similar with my work.
Sculptures was another new area for me to work with I decided to look at light sculptures as it was something I always wanted to try for my 3D shape. I looked at tubes lights, these weren’t very detail, the light itself was the form of the shape and each of these tubes of line were put together into a space as a installation however they lights had a lot of space between each other and I wanted to use this in my work and create shapes. I ended up using LED light as part of my to create shapes and lines in the background for my sculpture but not so much as the main focus as it was difficult to get the items needed for it to create my original idea. I came to a conclusion to make sculptures out of wires after looking at some images of them, the images of the sculptures I looked at used wire to create outlines of shapes and I took this idea and created lines in different motions to represent a path way.
As for my final piece I took out parts from each area of my work to create one object. I used shapes from my digital work as the main form of my object which were a square and a circle,  I also add a line of wire and use wood as my materials, and these were objects used in my 3D shape. I painted the piece in a marble texture as this was something I did in one of my tactile piece however this time it had colour, so I looked at some images of marble paintings with colour I focused on the colours blue, white and gold as I thought they mix well. I also used the LED light as part as my final piece, this was used during taking the 30 pictures of my work, and I used this as a illusion as a pathway again, It was interesting editing these pictures as I could do a lot with the blending effects on photoshop, and overall creating all these pieces was a new experience.

10 best Tactile (Traverse)

I choose these pieces as my 10 best because these were my most successful pieces. In these pieces I used paint and pens to create a illusion of a path, this was done by painting with different stokes with different objects like paint brushes, cardboard, strings or other found objects, using dragging motions and this also makes the pieces look abstract.
The materials used were black and white paint, indie ink and cardboard paper.

10 best Digital (Traverse)

These images were chosen to be my 10 best in my digital pieces because they were the ones that intrigued me the most, this is because I feel like these are the best pieces I produced, the shapes in these pieces are placed well to show “traverse”, also all these pieces have white space around them to create an minimalism look and also all these pieces use the same shapes however I have cut out parts of the shape out or repeat the shape to layer them to create a new shape.
The 10 best were printed on tracing paper and  cream textured paper. I choose tracing paper to print my digital pieces on because this created an abstract look for my work and I choose cream textured paper because it gave the work over all a nice clean look.
